Welcome to the Recycler’s Corner, where good gags are never put out with the trash. Today we’re taking a look at some Gus Mager strips. When we first put up the Hawkshaw the Detective archive, we made sure to include a few of the revival strips when Hawkshaw was brought back to the comics page as a topper for The Captain & The Kids. Little did we know the three installments of The Great Skeleton Reef Mystery were a little less than fresh. In fact 10 years prior, when Hawkshaw was being enjoying a brief second life as Sherlocko, there was a week long continuity entitled The Great Lighthouse Mystery. From Watso’s opening callisthenics to the twist at the end, the only mystery is what exactly is the difference between these two tales? I wonder if the rest of the Sunday page revival borrowed from past stories? Perhaps we’ll see you again, Gus Mager, in the Recycler’s Corner…
